As supplies of traditional musical instrument timbers diminish, Australian instrument makers are seeking alternative timbers. They have very specific requirements. The timber must be fine, straight grained, free of sapwood and blemishes. Stability and proper drying are vital in order to maintain pitch.

Many Outback timbers meet these criteria, with the added advantage of displaying an attractive figure and aroma. Already Outback timbers including Mulga, Brigalow, Gidgee and Beefwood are being used to make stringed instruments, flutes, flute head pieces, other wind and percussion instruments.

All our timber is kiln dried, conditioned, sanded and cut to your specifications.

Several of Australia’s leading luthiers use Loggerheads Timbers. They include Chris Wynne, Jeremy Fullerton, Jack Spira and Andrew Clarke.
